Chess Board Cake

  1. Cream together ½ lb of butter and ½ lb of sugar
  2. Add 5 eggs (one at a time)
  3. Add 10 oz flour
  4. Add 1 teaspoonful of baking powder
  5. Colour one-half with 1 tablespoonful of cocoa (or it may be coloured pink)
  6. Put each half in a greased divided tin, and bake about half an hour in moderate oven
  7. When cold cut each cake into four strips, put four pieces together with jam, colours alternately
  8. Roll out a piece of cocoa nut, paste, paint over with egg, lay cake bar on, and wrap completely round cake
